Recently Wells has begun examining state and federal laws that limit protests at funerals. In hasty reaction to the infamous protests begun by the Westboro Baptist Church in 2005, twenty-six states and the federal government have enacted laws limiting the timing and placement of demonstrations near cemeteries.
